Mile High DX Association

Meeting Minutes, August 24, 2008

By Michael Ferguson K0MF, Secretary / Treasurer

The summer meeting / picnic of the MHDXA was held on Sunday August 24 at the K0MF QTH in Evergreen Co.  Twenty three members, non-member hams, and spouses attended, a good turnout!  The weather cooperated, and we had a very enjoyable picnic!

Old Business:

Minutes of the prior meeting were accepted as read by the secretary.

Minutes of the April 4 board meeting were accepted as read by the secretary.

The treasurer’s report was accepted as read by the treasurer.  The MHDXA bank balance as of 8/15/08 was 1005.39.  Recent expenditures included a $100 donation for the ZS8 Marion Island station, the annual website hosting renewal of $59.40, and club liability insurance renewal of $320.00.

No official newsletter update was provided as Jack was traveling out of state, but several positive comments were expressed about the great work he did on the most recent issue.  Please, keep the articles headed his way!

Larry KI0RH provided an update on the mentoring program.  He noted little activity.  Don W0DM volunteered to make sure our printed information was in stock at HRO for passers-by.  Other ideas were discussed about how to attract newcomers to HF, and ultimately, DX’ing.

Mike K0COM initiated a brief discussion on the Hamcon meeting in Utah.  It was evidently well attended, but had little DX-focused activity.  Some discussion was focused on the 2009 meeting, which will be back at Estes Park.  Any suggestions regarding club participation next year should be forwarded to the board.

Mike K0COM also mentioned the upcoming Colorado and Zero-land QSO parties.

Mike K0COM reminded the group about the membership certificates available, and that the ARRL-style country total emblem can be added.

A discussion ensued about having our artwork sent to Hamthread, for a $100 fee.  This would allow any member to order customized MHDXA hats, T-shirts, and other clothing online at will.  Some were curious about whether the fee was reasonable.  Mike K0COM will soon put the web link on the reflector so each member can investigate individually.  The question will be put to a vote in the near future.

New Business:

K0MF mentioned that we presently have 52 MHDXA members in good standing

K0MF mentioned that the KP5 Desecheo Island operation funding vote was still on hold, and still is as of this writing.  An e-vote will be conducted once the worthy operation(s) can be determined.

Mike K0MF initiated a discussion about the possibility of establishing an honorary lifetime type of membership.  This would be used to recognize those few standout members who, over the years, have made significant ongoing contributions to the development or continued success of MHDXA.   This membership would be a method to ensure a long-standing connection between the club and those members.  Mike K0COM agreed to create an award letter and special membership certificate.  A grant of honorary lifetime membership will be initiated by a nomination of the candidate to the board by a current member, reviewed and recommended by the board to the membership, and then voted on and carried by the membership.

Don W0DM made a motion to create such a membership, and nominate Bill Leahy, K0MP, and Pam Leahy, W0NF as our first Honorary lifetime members.  Cheryl N0WBV seconded.  The board approved, a vote was conducted, and the motion carried.  Congratulations, Bill and Pam! You’re stuck with us forever!

The 50/50 raffle, worth a total of $80, was won by Mike K0MF.  Mike donated ½ of his winnings back to the club, fattening the treasury by a total of $60.

The formal business meeting was closed.  The program was a video of the Scarborough Reef BS7H operation, graciously provided by Tom W0GLG.   This is a great video – if you’ve not seen it yet, make sure you find a way to see this sometime.

Respectfully submitted,

Michael Ferguson K0MF
